Well, I’ve been keeping something from you, and the time has come to fess up. It’s all about this…

Note the “Modules Menu” across the top under the header graphic. There are some more revealing snapshots below, but first, a little background…
Some time back I emailed all members of The Hacker’s Nightmare to advise that in future I would be publishing most of my posts, warnings, notifications and articles on this blog. Prior to that I had always corresponded with members exclusively via e-mail, but I was always fighting…
Mail failures & other challenges
With any large membership list there is always going to be a percentage of members who want to receive your messages but won’t get them, often through no fault of the sender or receiver. Such are the vagaries of e-mail (not to mention some of the stupid practices engaged in by many “providers”).
Anyway, even using the most reliable of commercial e-mail delivery services, it got to the point where various forms of delivery failures were happening so often that I had to rethink my communications channel.
Another advantage of going the blog route is that it makes useful information and timely warnings available to a wider audience.
While members will always have their perks and advantages, it has long concerned me that so many people are vulnerable and exploitable because often they just don’t know that plain language help — advice that THEY can understand and implement — really is available.
At least with a publicly accessible blog there is always a chance those folks will stumble across it, especially one like this that is steadily climbing the popularity rankings.
Guilty As Charged!
But of late I’ve been very conscious of the fact that my communications haven’t been as frequent as they used to be in the pre-blog days. Some of our long-standing members have voiced concern and to that I must plead no contest.
My publication slow-down was definitely not through design, laziness or lack of interest, but their dissatisfaction is justified never-the-less.
So now I’ll offer up my excuse. I hope it’s good enough.
In My Defense, Your Honour
You see, for the past several months I’ve been completely absorbed in creating a new membership site, and unfortunately something had to give way. Publishing the sort of articles I like to provide would have taken valuable time away from that development, which I consider to be very, very important. And I hope you will see it that way too.
The new site will replace The Hacker’s Nightmare member site and will be closely integrated with this blog. Here are a few of the most important points, some of which I will expand on further in future posts:
- This blog will stay public; it will not be hidden behind the membership site login;
- The Hacker’s Nightmare e-book is to be withdrawn from sale;
- The current Hacker’s Nightmare member site will disappear;
- Existing Hacker’s Nightmare members will be automatically grandfathered into the new membership;
- Although the blog will remain public, the membership site will be available to members only;
- Members will benefit from a number of perks, bonuses and special services, as well as having full access to all the reference material, none of which will be available to the general public.
I’ll have more to say about those and other changes in the near future, but right now I need to clarify two of those points:
1. Although The Hacker’s Nightmare e-book will be withdrawn from
sale, all of the material from these substantial resources…
- The Hacker’s Nightmare
- Seven Steps to a Clean PC
- The E-Mail Encryption Guide
- Spam Warfare
…will be included on the new site in a new format.
All of that material, much of it updated, PLUS a lot of new stuff you haven’t seen before, has been categorized into topic-specific modules. The graphic above that I opened with shows some of those modules on the Modules Menu across the top of every page. Each Module has its own Topic Menu down the left-hand side of every page.
Call that a “beta peek” — the page design and layout might change before or after public opening. I’ve been much more concerned with providing lots of quality content than with appearance, although I do think the appearance passes muster for the time being. Also, no doubt more Modules will be added as time passes.
2. Now a few words about the automatic inclusion of existing members
into the new site. In the interests of brevity I’ll refer to those
dedicated people as Old Members.
Old Members won’t have to do anything to gain access to the new site. Once I close the old site and open the new, your existing login credentials should still work fine.
When you purchased The Hacker’s Nightmare I promised you lifetime membership of the member site, and I’m not going to go renege on that promise just because the site is changing. Old members will have full and permanent access to all the reference material.
But what Old Members won’t have automatic access to is some of the services and bonuses that are completely new to the new membership site. There’s a good reason for that:
These services cost me real money, ongoing, but I’ll be providing them to members either free or at-cost, as a benefit of membership.
New Member Benefits
Bonuses and benefits for members are something I’ll be working on continuously. For now I’ll just mention one so you’ll understand that I really am going to be absorbing costs.
Every monthly member will be entitled to free registration of a domain name of their choice PLUS free website hosting for that domain name PLUS a personal website displaying any of your own details that you wish to share PLUS a personalized Contact Form on the website.
The Contact Form is an important security and anti-spam feature that I’ll discuss further in a future post.
I’ve made the website creation process so simple that absolutely anyone can take advantage of it. You order your personal domain name via a simple form in the member’s area. Then, all you need do to get your personal website up and running is answer some straight-forward questions on another short and simple form. The same form allows you to upload an image if you wish.
And be assured this is no server-in-my-basement setup. Your personal website will be professionally hosted on a fast 64-bit web server running Windows Server 2008, located in a professionally managed data-centre.
And yes, you will OWN the domain name. It won’t be owned by us and just loaned out to you, a ploy used by some unscrupulous membership site managers. If at any time you should decide to cancel your membership the domain name is still yours. Of course you will lose your free hosting if you leave us, but that’s something you can take up with any commercial provider.
So What Will This Cost?
The normal monthly membership cost has not been finalized yet, but I guarantee there will be no shocks, no unpleasant surprises.
Membership will be open to new members for a very reasonable monthly fee.
Old Members, who will have free access to all the reference material, will also be eligible for a significant discount on the full membership, thus gaining unrestricted access to all the new bonuses, services and facilities as well.
Stay Up-To-Date
If you would like to be kept informed of progress and developments with the new membership site just provide your name and e-mail address below. Whenever I have new information to share relating to the new site you’ll be notified.
Given the numbers involved I’m probably going to have to to restrict membership numbers initially, as I have to be sure we can service members properly. Also, we just wouldn’t be able to handle hundreds of simultaneous requests for the free website hosting.
Everybody will be catered for eventually, but at the outset preference will be given to those people who register their interest in the new site. So to avoid delay please register below now!
If you have any interest at all in your online welfare and the health of your computer you should stay tuned. I’ll be describing and demonstrating some surprising features.

Got questions?
Please post your questions below as a comment, so everyone can benefit from the information. Be assured I’ll respond promptly.

this sounds very interesting.. keep moving along with your plan.
Agree with Benjamin. Sounds good. Fair enough too wrt charging – all this info takes time to gather and present and I’m grateful someone with some experience does it for me.
This sounds really good, Bill! I agree with the others here…..everything does take time and who best but to have you do the footwork that saves us time looking for it. For that in itself, I am very appreciative because it will be truthful, coming from a professional like you! Very interesting! Thanks so much!
Found the link via email failed when trying to submit request on different computers. However when I used this link “Bill Hely’s “Computer & Online Security” I was sent direct to the web page where my submission was successful. Others might be having the same issue.
Definitely looking forward to the new site Bill, I had come to think there was nobody left in this world that puts sharing knowledge before PROFIT!
Hi Bill,
You have been an invaluable resource for some years now and with your permission, we have occasionally repeated some of your warnings and guidance on our community newsletter to help the less knowlegeable. It is great that a lot if information will be in the public domain, so that with you (and the Hoax Slayer, if you don’t mind me giving them a plug) we can point people to authoritative sources of information which should help them protect themselves.
Sounds great to me – You are obviously going to be a busy lad !!
Slightly Off Topic – In addition to Hoax Slayer, there is another very good website called Snopes, for checking the validity of scams, hoaxes etc.
Seems lots of good things are coming out of Oz!
As an ‘Old Member’, and an affiliate for the Hacker’s Nightmare package, I’m anxious to know if you have any suggestions for posting the withdrawal notice for the Nightmare book, like including an invitation to become a “New Member”. Also curious about the Hosting Platform choice – Windows Server 2008, and – “Old Member + New Member” sounds like a powerful combination. I’m all for it.
Windows 7 is set for release this month, so do you have any special plans as far as a section and/or page specializing on information we need to know before/after upgrading/installation of this latest Microsoft OS. The consensus I’ve been reading about, is that it is everything that Vista was supposed to be. Does this mean that we won’t have to be afraid anymore? Looking forward to your new website and membership.
ur makin progress…be interesting to see new developments
Bill… an ambitious project. Wish you all the best. You’ve helped me a lot over the years. If I can help you at all — writing, proofreading… — let me know, you’ve got my email.
While I’ve been getting a night’s rest y’all have been commenting away. I’ll provide individual responses (where required) in subsequent replies below. But first…
THANK YOU ALL VERY MUCH FOR THE WORDS OF ENCOURAGEMENT.
Your input is valuable and very much appreciated.

>Found the link via email failed…
We very occasionally get reports that the link provided in an e-mail notification fails. When the writer sends the e-mail back to us the link works fine.
Links in e-mails can sometimes do weird things. I occasionally get e-mails that contain links that will repeatedly open in Internet Explorer, although my default browser is Firefox.
I’ve never taken the time to investigate why this is so — something I guess I’ll have to look at one day.
Andrew:
> Hoax Slayer, if you don’t mind me giving them a plug
Not at all. I’m a subscriber myself and Brett has often recommended The Hacker’s Nightmare to his subscribers. We’ve never met but he lives about 200 miles north of me, in a small coastal town famous for its Rum! Beautiful spot.
Anyone not familiar with Hoax Slayer can check it out at:

> As an ‘Old Member’, and an affiliate…
I’ve posted a special page for affiliates which should answer your questions and perhaps encourage you to help me with the decision. You’ll find it under the Affiliates link on The Hacker’s Nightmare website:
http://HackersNightmare.com
> curious about the Hosting Platform choice
Two main factors influenced that decision.
Firstly, lots of coding is needed to make the new membership site work. While I can dabble in PHP and a few other languages, I am most familiar with ASP, which of course is Windows-centric.
Secondly, that’s where I was able to do the best deal, keeping in mind that I’ll be offering a free website with free hosting to members.
Later on, when the whole thing is bedded down comfortably, I’ll be able to allow any members who really need Linux/Apache to transfer their site to a different server. However it’s my belief that the majority of members will continue to use their personalized default site. The default site is more than adequate for the purpose for which it is intended — but more on that in a future post.

> Windows 7 is set for release this month, so do you have..
It seems every man and his gardener is writing about Windows 7, and of course I will eventually have my say in a post on this blog. I don’t want to get into it now but I agree with most commentators that it does look fairly impressive.
That said, I have to recommend caution. When it comes to computer operating systems the last thing the average computer user wants to be is a trailblazer. Trailblazers attract more than their fair share of spears and arrows. If you are currently running a stable, usable version such as XP-SP3 (fully patched) then I wouldn’t be inclined to rush in to an upgrade, unless you have a spare PC you can try it on.
However, my advice to anyone about to buy a new PC is to wait and get Windows 7 pre-installed. At least you’ll be sure to have all the right drivers and so on.
Diane M:
> If I can help you at all — writing, proofreading…
Many thanks Diane. I confess to being a little pedantic when it comes to spelling and legibility, so I always appreciate when someone points out even the smallest typo. Everyone should feel free to do so.
Folks, Diane is another long-time member of The Hacker’s Nightmare with a very useful site of her own. If you’re in business pay her a visit at: http://www.business-resources-hrc.com
Bill, I am excited about all your working on and look forward to seeing the fruits of your labor.
Bill, you have been a source of more stellar information than anyone else out there. Am looking forward to the new site.
Had the same problem with the website above, in both Firefox and IE it failed. Is there another way to access it ?
